On Thursday, the Mustang field hockey team defeated the Western Albemarle Warriors 1-0 to claim the regional championship, keeping their perfect record intact at 19-0.
From the beginning, the Mustangs dominated play and kept the ball on the Western Albemarle side of the field for the majority of the game, but the game remained tied 0-0 at the half. Early in the third quarter, left forward Natalia Tweddle received a pass up the sideline and gained momentum, carrying it to the baseline and sending a cross toward the goal. Center forward Tricia Abedejos stood on the baseline and put a stick on the ball, sending it in front of the goalie and into striking distance for right forward Leni Paradiso, who popped it into the goal.
Ultimately, the one goal was all it took for them to claim victory, as the defense and goalie Baelyn Reinfurt stayed calm under pressure and shut down the Warriors’ offense.
The Mustangs are going into the State quarterfinals as the number one seed for Region B and will host New Kent on Saturday, November 7th at 12:00 p.m. Please come out and cheer on the Mustangs as they begin the state run!
