FCCPS Announces Business and Community Partner Honorees

The Falls Church City Public Schools (FCCPS) Business in Education Partnership (BIE) announces the recognition of seven community partners in appreciation of their ongoing commitment to working in partnership with FCCPS teachers, students and parents. Each honoree has engaged in multi-year, multifaceted partnerships, with a wide variety of school stakeholders.

The Virginia School Boards Association Business Honor Roll

FCCPS names three businesses to this statewide recognition. These local companies join hundreds more for this statewide honor.
Hilton Garden Inn, Falls Church is a gathering place for both Falls Church residents and visitors.
Groups of enthusiastic students greet veterans when Honor Flight groups stay at the Hilton Garden Inn. Students learn about hospitality management careers through mentoring and externships. The hotel sponsors New Teacher Orientation and the Falls Church Education Foundation(FCEF) Run for the Schools and is a donor to the FCEF Annual Gala and Auction. The hotel loans their bell ropes to schools for special VIP events. The Hilton Garden Inn provides meeting space for FCCPS staff as needed. When possible tour buses park in GMHS parking lots overnight.

Markon Solutions is national consulting company, headquartered in Falls Church. Markon’s commitment to the schools includes the involvement of many employees. Their partnerships include: working with middle school girls to increase awareness of STEM careers; helping FCCPS plan a pilot student intern program and hosting GMHS student intern and extern; participating in the Henderson Family STEAM Night and Career Fair; sponsoring the Falls Church Education Foundation Annual Gala and Run for the Schools, where they won the “largest team” award as well as “fastest team” award.

Falls Church Honored Partners

These four businesses made significant contributions to school programs.
Dexter Industries brought the power of the Raspberry Pi into the STEAM and CTE courses at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. Using the company’s GoPiGo3 robot and PivotPi control board, students strengthen their programming skills with hands on tools donated by Dexter. Employees provided demonstrations at the Henderson Family STEAM Night.

Envision Experience offers after-school STEAM enrichment to Henderson students at no cost. Henderson serves as a beta site to test new programs and equipment that are eventually included in their National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) summer career exploration programs offered at various locations across the country. Students have had the opportunity to participate in hummingbird design challenges, introduction to forensics, disaster triage, and emergency medicine modules using virtual reality. Additionally, Envision has offered girls-only enrichment sessions as well as sessions devoted to English Language Learners. Envision staff members presented at both Family STEAM Night and the Career Fair.

Plaka Grill is always willing to partner with the schools. The family-owned Greek restaurant regularly hosts school fundraising dine out days. The restaurant generously donates complimentary meals for new teachers during orientation and throughout the year for special occasions.

The Kensington Falls Churchreceives the Rookie of the Year award for jumping right into school partnerships. They are mentoring several George Mason High School student interns in various departments. The Kensington has been a sponsor of the Falls Church Education Foundation Annual Gala. A Kensington employee serves on the Business in Education Partnership Advisory Committee.

All seven honorees join a distinguished list of partners who have been recognized since 2009. They were  honored as part of the FCCPS Celebration of Excellence on Thursday, May 10 at Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School.
