Virginia School Board Association LogoThe Virginia Schools Boards Association (VSBA) has included three Falls Church City Public Schools programs in its 23rd annual VSBA Showcases for Success online directory. The website highlights successful K-12 programs in Virginia’s public schools with the 2019 focus on Career, College and Life Ready program offerings.

FCCPS programs included in the VSBA Showcase for Success include:

  • FCCPS Business and Community Partnership Program - Teachers identify opportunities to work with community members on a wide variety of curriculum-related topics. Professionals then visit classrooms and extra-curricular programs to share their expertise.
  • Window on Careers: Career Fair and Career Chats - At Mary Ellen Henderson, some 100 presenters set up displays about their education and career. They are organized by Career Cluster and before the event, students indicate their interests, carry a ‘passport’ with the requirement to speak to 6 people, ask questions and get a stamp. At George Mason High School the Mustang Career Chats are personalized small group conversations also organized by Career Cluster.
  • Hydroponics and Aquaponics - At George Mason High School and Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School, lunches include lettuce grown in the schools’ hydroponic units. Fresh lettuce grown by middle and high school students travels less than 1000 feet from garden to table. The project is the result of a collaboration between the Food Services Director and a biology teacher with a funding grant from the Falls Church Education Foundation.

“In addition to highlighting some of the best practices taking place in Virginia’s schools, the VSBA Showcases for Success directory can serve as a starting point to develop similar programs in other school division,” said Gina G Patterson, VSBA executive directory.

The Showcases include 116 programs from 56 school divisions from across Virginia.
