Dr Noonan's Friday COVID-19 Closure Update

May 22, 2020

Versión en español a continuación

This year, like all school years, has been marked by milestones and waypoints. However, this year’s waypoints have been very different...March 13th (Friday the 13th) - school closure, March 18th - the start of online learning, Spring Break, April 13th - the start of new instruction, and now we are at Memorial Day. Traditionally, this weekend is the unofficial start of summer and the countdown to the end of school begins with the opening of pools and the eye towards some much needed downtime. This year seems different though. Of course Memorial Day is meant to honor those who died in the service of our country - maybe this year it could also be seen as a day to honor the nearly 100,000 people who have died in the US from COVID 19.

For many, this Memorial Day may feel just like any other day - no pool, no parade, ambiguity about the summer...but...it still marks the beginning of the end of the school year and that, for many, remains a huge celebration. As we begin to wind down the year, I want to say thank you again for all of the incredible support our parents, community, staff, and students have shown to the schools since we embarked on this odd journey.

Your love, compassion, and genuine kindness for each other and the community has carried the day. The heart of a community is measured by how they rise during the time of crisis...you have risen to the occasion and then some! My hope for the City of Falls Church as we start the countdown to the end of school is that our students will continue to look for ways to give back to our community, be empathic leaders in their response to others, keep showing their caring spirit, and read, read, read!

This week’s note, after the dissertation last week, is notably shorter so you can begin your three day weekend with fun, games in the house, take out from a Falls Church restaurant, and an art project to celebrate our seniors (see below). Happy Memorial Day.

Updates

Celebrating our Graduates

Yesterday I had the fortune to video my portion of this year’s graduation video. I am so excited for our seniors and it is an honor to participate in their rite of passage. I think it would be great to have everyone in the City of Falls Church put up a sign in your window, make a yard sign, or find some creative way to congratulate the Class of 2020. When you put up your celebratory piece please tweet it to @peternoonan with the #fccps2020grads and I will retweet them and put them out into the “Twitterverse” for all to see. Have fun with this and the more creative the better!

COVID 19 Testing

This weekend, as I reported on my Wednesday video update @peternoonan, there will be the first communitywide testing for COVID 19 in our area. On Saturday from 10-6 there will be FREE testing at Annandale High School and on Sunday from 10-6 there will be FREE testing at Bailey’s Crossroads Elementary. Neither site requires a referral from a doctor and if you do not have health insurance, the Fairfax County Health Department has made arrangements with local health providers to offer care for free for anyone who tests positive. We have also gathered information about other testing resources for our community. Please see our website for more information.

Reminders

GMHS Time Capsule

I have been working with our Owner’s Representatives, Brailsford & Dunleavy, to produce a ‘Call to Action’ for our new GMHS Time Capsule. We are asking everyone to suggest items to be included so, one day, future generations can enjoy looking back. No doubt there will be a face mask. So think about what you think would be great to include and send your idea to newgmhs@fccps.org

Mental Health Supports

This has been a time of high anxiety and stress for us all. We need to take the same care with our mental health as we do with our physical health. Focusing on emotional needs is essential. It is ok to step back and take a break. We are in the midst of a traumatic event. Caring for yourself and your students is critical. Please visit our FCCPS Mental Health Page for community resources, stress reduction/self-care activities and other information related to this topic. Check on each other, reach out, and remember you are not alone. We are also working on a plan to provide division-wide mental health supports during the summer.

Food/Nutrition Support

FCCPS continues to provide weekly meal support each Friday. Any family in need can order 7-days worth of breakfasts and lunches for each child in their family. The boxes of food are distributed at Thomas Jefferson Elementary and George Mason High School. Please visit our FCCPS Nutritional/Support Webpage for information on how to sign up for this wonderful resource. Please reach out to Richard Kane (rkane@fccps.org) for more information or with questions.

Communication/Morning Announcements

The Morning Announcements are back, and I hope you have a chance to see them. We will keep these up for the remainder of the school year. Updates from me have shifted to once a week on Fridays. I, also, will continue to use Twitter to send messages out (including my Wednesday videos from ‘Somewhere in FCCPS’), so please follow me @peternoonan

Celebrando a nuestros Graduados

Recordatorios

GMHS Time Capsule
