Superintendent Peter Noonan has announced a new Falls Church City Public School Policy mandating at least 30 minutes of recess for all elementary students.

The regulation unveiled during a recent School Board meeting is consistent with the recent change in the state rules now considering Recess as part of the instructional day.

Regulation IGAE-R - Recess for Elementary Students

The new rule mandates at least 30 minutes of "student-selected structured or unstructured play" at the elementary school level where students should "engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity" during full school days.

The regulation also forbids the withholding of recess from a student or group of students as a means of punishment or to be used for academic or extracurricular activities.

Both Mount Daniel Elementary and Thomas Jefferson Elementary schools began instituting the expanded recess periods on the first day of the new school year.  Administrators from the schools will update the School Board on the impact of the expanded playtime in October.
