Flood Waters Damage MEHMS Gym Again

Flood waters pour in MEHMS from exterior wall and under gym floor

Falls Church City Public Schools maintenance crews are working round the clock to stem the amount of flood waters discovered coming in through an exterior wall and under the new Mary Ellen Henderson gym floor.

The damage follows by almost one year the irreparable harm to the same floor caused then by the rupture of a fire sprinkler pipe. Experts will arrive on Monday to determine the source of the deluge and whether the floor faces a similar fate as last year.

The water is seeping in from an exterior wall on the west side of the building near the softball field. FCCPS maintenance crews will continue mitigation efforts until crews arrive next week.

If not the cause, the wet, wintry weather over the last 48 hours, on top of the 4th wettest season on record in the DC Metropolitan region, is only exacerbating the issue.

All activities planned in the gym have been canceled until further notice. Mary Ellen Henderson administrators and staff are developing an alternative PE instructional plan that will be similar to that put in action last winter during the fire sprinkler rupture.

George Mason athletics will also be moving back to The Pit, the old George Mason gym, for the upcoming basketball season.
