MASHING MAIZE INTO A MEAL - It only takes a rock, a rope,a tree stump and a little muscle to grind kernels into cornmeal the Native American way. Second grade students at Thomas Jefferson learned about Native American history and culture through food, planting, games, rope-making, beads, music and dance. Special thanks for all parents of the Outdoor Classroom and all others involved.

Thomas Jefferson students circled the George Mason High School track on Thursday, May 12, again and again for the annual TJ Mile Run. Overall fitness was the goal this year as third and fourth grade students participated in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge.

Second grade students were encouraged by teachers and parents to run or walk laps, too.

ARE YOU UP FOR A PRESIDENTIAL CHALLENGE OF YOUR OWN? > >

(GMHS Track: 4 laps = 1 mile)

Artifacts from all seven continents (even Antarctica) were represented in a museum-like exhibit that brought the world to life in the TJ library yesterday. Parents and international students from Marymount University shared their knowledge, while students marveled at the treasure-trove of art, clothing, pottery, music, toys, masks and other artifacts.

This project promotes the concept of international mindedness advocated by the Primary Years Program. Viewing artifacts from the different continents, children were able to recognize what they have in common with people from around the world, as well as different ways that people adapt to their environment. As continent banners are displayed throughout the school, map skills will also be reinforced.
