Counseling Services Available in Wake of Virginia Tech Incident

When Falls Church City staff first learned about the devastating news in Blacksburg, it hit close to home.  Several of our graduates are enrolled at Virginia Tech, and their siblings are Falls Church City students.  While the shootings do not appear to have directly impacted our FCCPS families, some of our students and staff were acquainted with some of the victims.  Our hearts go out to everyone grieving over the tragic loss of life.

Counseling services have been made available to all FCCPS students and staff, and our counselors will continue to watch closely for signs that some may be having difficulty coping with what has happened.  Parents who have concerns about their children are encouraged to use the counseling resources at their children’s school.

Parents can also help children process what’s happened by talking with them.  One helpful resource for talking with children about school safety and violence is available on the National Association of School Psychologists Web site at http://www.nasponline.org/resources/crisis_safety/talkingviolence.pdf.
