Superintendent Lois Berlin loves to visit classrooms, but it’s a big deal when she does so to recognize outstanding teachers. This morning, Berlin, a cadre of colleagues, photographers and other members of the school system surprised five teachers with flowers and the news that they are nominees for this year’s Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award.
“Recognizing outstanding teachers is one of the most enjoyable things I do, and I look forward to my surprise visits every year,” Berlin said.
The Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award recognizes outstanding teachers in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area. This year’s FCCPS nominees are:

This year’s nominations were screened by a four-person review committee consisting of a retired principal, a retired central office administrator, a current central office administrator and a former school board member.
The winning teacher will be announced by the Washington Post in a few weeks, and he or she will receive a cash award from the Post. The winner and nominees will be recognized by the school board at a reception in the spring.
