FCCPS Test Scores Indicate
Overall Excellence

All School Meet Federal Standards

The latest Standards of Learning (SOL) test scores are out, and the Falls Church City Public Schools performed well for the 2006-2007 school year. The division as a whole and all four schools individually made adequate yearly progress (AYP) in all target areas as defined by the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

"The standards have always been high in our school division, and I'm so proud of our students and staff for meeting, and in some cases exceeding, those standards," Superintendent Lois Berlin said. "The results are a testament to their hard work and the tradition of excellence that make our school division one of the best in the nation."

AYP is determined primarily by achievement rates in mathematics and reading, and by achievement rates of sub-populations determined by various factors such as socioeconomic status, race and disability. Last year, Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School students with limited English proficiency did not make AYP in mathematics. The school's new principal credits the school's specialized learning opportunities for helping students improve.

"We can tell from the achievement data that our targeted classroom activities and the Saturday Academy made a big difference," Principal Ann McCarty said. "We were very strategic in our approach, and we will continue to offer targeted assistance to any student who needs help."

While the overall news is good, staff members will disaggregate the student data to identify any academic areas that may need additional attention and resources to further ensure student success. The practice is in line with the school division's strategic plan, which was adopted last year by the Falls Church City School Board.
