| Nine teachers in the Falls Church City Public Schools are now among some 55,000 teachers nationwide to earn certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, Superintendent Lois Berlin announced last night at a regular meeting of the Falls Church City School Board. The teachers are the first in the FCCPS to attain this achievement since the school division initiated its program to promote National Board Certification.
“I am very proud of the teachers from our school division who were brave enough to take on this challenge,” Berlin said. “The certification process is voluntary, time-consuming and very difficult.”
National Board Certification is the highest symbol of professional teaching excellence. To receive the distinction, candidates must fulfill the requirements of a rigorous, two-year process that demonstrates a teacher’s ability to meet high standards in his or her field. The teachers will be recognized at an upcoming school board meeting. They bring to 10 the total number of National Board Certified teachers in the school division. Middle school teacher Tarra Barton obtained her national certification prior to joining the Falls Church City Public Schools.
