Mission Statement: The Falls Church City Schools ESOL Program provides a caring and nurturing environment that challenges its students both academically and socially to go beyond mandated state and national goals and prepares them to become productive members of the local and global societies, while serving as a bridge between the multi-cutural community and the school system.

What's Happening in November?

Monthly Reading Tip: Reading for Point of View (or perspective) and tone

> Point of View or perspective tells what kind of narrator (person) is telling the story.

> There are 2 basic types: in 1st person the narrator is part of the story and uses the pronouns "I," "me," "my," or "mine" to talk about himself or herself.

In 3rd person the narrator is not part of the story but knows everything about the story's characters and what they know.

> Tone is what the author's attitude or feelings are about the subject or topic of the story. To decide what the "tone" of a book is ask yourself

What does the narrator's talking voice sound like? Does it sound funny, sad, happy, angry, etc.?

How do I feel when I read the story? These questions can help you decide on the tone of a novel.

Happy reading!
