The Mt. Daniel Family Literacy Program is a multicultural, multigenerational program serving the community of Falls Church City. It is provided in partnership with the Falls Church City Public Schools and the City of Falls Church Department of Housing and Human Services. This program offers an integrated educational experience for parents and their children and encourages a collaborative partnership among home, school and community. The program is free to participants. To qualify, applicants must be Falls Church City residents, have children between the ages of 0 and 10 and meet income requirements. Regular participation is required in order to remain enrolled in the program. THERE ARE 4 COMPONENTS TO THE FALLS CHURCH FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM: Early Childhood Education -- Children participate in an age appropriate,
high quality educational program designed to build a foundation for future
school success.
Adult Education/ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) --
Both daytime and evening ESOL classes are offered to individuals wishing
to improve their English language skills. There are classes for beginning
and intermediate English speakers as well as opportunities for more advanced
English speakers. With greater language and literacy skills, individuals
will have improved economic opportunities and a possibility to pursue further
educational goals.
Family Literacy Nights and Home Visits -- Several times during the year we have activities at school in the evening. These activities instill in children the importance of school, provide opportunities for families to enjoy literacy activities together and help create a community of learners. In addition, Family Literacy teachers visit each family's home occasionally to spend time one-on-one with the families and to reinforce classroom learning.
PACT ( Parent & Child Time Together) -- Parents and children spend time together in the child's classroom or take part in monthly family activities. Monthly activities include field trips and family literacy nights. Parents are asked to volunteer in the classroom two or three times a year.
FAMILIES WHO MEET ALL OF THESE REQUIREMENTS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE FAMILY LITERACY PROGRAM:
