The kids will play while the seniors are away

Print
While seniors are celebrating their completion of high school, the rest of the George Mason student body is celebrating for reasons less prestigious.

As the seniors begin to finish exams and leave the school building, sophomores have begun to file in to the junior alcoves and courtyard as juniors start to mark their territory in the senior alcoves and courtyard. Freshmen are beginning to come to the realization that they are now a step closer to having their very own alcove, and Gr8's are gawking over the fact that they will no longer be the smallest people to travel Mason's halls.

Some teachers are jumping for joy, while others sob over the loss of their beloved senior classes. Students and teachers alike have different opinions on the senior class leaving and some of their thoughts are quite interesting.

Walsh It's the senior's natural progression, and they should be moving on anyways, although I look forward to seeing them in the future."
-Brian Walsh, English teacher
Hickey "I'm glad to see Manuel has finally left, although I love him...love hurt sometimes. At the same time it's disappointing to see the juniors in the senior alcove already."
-James Hickey, freshman
CarolinaClaudiaGabriela "We love using the senior alcoves and courtyard, but even still we now have no one to look up to."-Carolina Ampuero, Gabriela Villalon, and Claudia Villamor, all juniors
ConstanceLewisCattaneo "I am going to miss my sister the most" and "I am losing a lot of friends in band class."
-Sally Lewis, and Lia Cattaneo, sophomores
Constancejpg "The girls cross country will be losing a lot of its state runners when the seniors leave."
-Clair Constance, sophomore
Spicer "I am going to miss all of my amazingly talented senior actors, whom were also helpful aids during my classes."-Pamela Spicer
Theater/Performing arts teacher

Formspring is the new Honesty Box

Print
A new trend has emerged amongst the underclassmen, namely the rising seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. A social networking site called formspringme.com has become the newest outlet for bullying in schools.

Similar to Honesty Box, a Facebook application, Formspring allows people to send other Formspring users anonymous messages, but unlike Honesty Box, if the student who received the message responds, it is posted on their profile for others to see. While some comments are compliments, others can turn vicious and sometimes even sexual. Many parents and teachers argue that this helps spread bullying around schools. The rude comments and how to handle them is not the only problem at hand, but also why so many students even bother to go on these sites if they know they'll login to an awful message.

5-13-10_002 "My mom always said, "If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all." I think it's stupid for people to write mean stuff and it's unfortunate that people take it too seriously."
- Sarah Johnson, junior
5-13-10_005 "It's kind of messed up. I don't know much about [Formspring], but it doesn't sound like the kind of thing kids should expose themselves to."
-Matt Abel, sophomore
5-13-10_003 "It's absurd that people write bad stuff in the first place, but victims shouldn't take it too seriously."
-Savannah Ruiz, sophomore
5-13-10_004 "It hasn't gotten out of hand. Even if we didn't have Formspring, [other students] would write on their wall, or find another way."
-Allie Plata, Gr8
5-13-10_009 "I think that kind of stuff happens with or without the Internet, so it's not the Internet that we should be worried about, it's the people. The bigger problem is that the Internet accelerates it. Let's take care of the problem in the first place."
-Chas Bowling, junior

Subs on the street

What student doesn't love walking into class and seeing a friendly substitute sitting at the teacher's desk? Regardless of whether teachers are sick, or just don't feel like showing up to school one day, the administration can always count on one of these individuals to fill in. We all have seen how important substitute teachers are to our school, but why exactly is George Mason just as important to them?

ms_c "My favorite thing is that it's like a private school in a public setting. The teachers know the kids, the kids know the teachers, the principal can tell everybody's name, and behavior over here is a thousand times better than any other school that I've ever worked at. Really!"
-Rita Citrenbaum
krieser "Mason is a fairly small high school and I enjoy coming over here because I like the students here. They're well behaved and focused and I feel as though I can connect with the younger generation by substitute teaching."
-Al Kreiser
brunet "My favorite thing about subbing at George Mason is the fact that I'm treated as a professional."
-Corey Brunet
gravette "Being around the young people here at George Mason is very interesting and enlightening for me."
-Jim Gravette

City of lights?

Print
Prom pops up every year and each year boasts a new theme. This year, it has been decided that the theme will be Paris-style, dubbed the "City of Lights."

Prom themes tend to hold mixed reviews among students, so we asked a few for their opinion of the prom theme.

SamWaters "It's very romantic."
-Sam Waters, junior
TeagueGuy "It should've been a black light party – neon paint, etc."
-Teague Guy, junior
DanHunt "I could really care less."
-Dan Hunt, senior
SarahJohnson "I really think they went online and got prom themes."
-Sarah Johnson, junior

Greeting open doors with open arms?

Print
After a "closed door policy" was proposed for prom a few weeks ago, forcing students to stay at prom for the duration of the dance, it has recently been confirmed that this policy will not be in effect at this year's prom.

According to junior class officer Gemma Seidita, the administration said they do not have the authority to enact a closed door policy for prom. Thus, I will be asking the student body how they like the new "open door policy," giving students the freedom to leave the dance early, keeping in mind that they will have to pay to re-enter the dance.

POS_Prom_Maddy "I have mixed feelings about that. It's good because you can leave
whenever you want. But it's bad because I think some people won't give
prom a chance and will leave early." – Maddy McAllister (senior)
POS_Prom_Sally "I kind of liked the closed door policy because everyone would have to
be there for the whole time, but we can make the open door policy
work." – Sally Tran (senior)
POS_Prom_George "I'm glad there's an open door policy so people can leave when they
want to. Some people might have to leave for personal reasons and this
lets them do that." – George Kalantzis (senior)
POS_Prom_Peso "I kind of like the open door policy because it gives you more freedom,
I just don't like that you have to pay to re-enter. One of my friends
has to leave during the dance and he may not be able to come back to
it."- Andrew Arias (senior)
POS_Prom_Britta_Jenny "I like open door a lot better; it gives you more freedom. But at the
same time I think people shouldn't leave early because it will ruin it
for everyone else who stays." – Britta Coley (senior) and Jenny Lewis
(senior)

Megan’s Summer Playlist

Print
Aka, "Man this day is gorgeous and I want nothing more than to sit out here and fry like an egg" MIX
The playlist below is compiled by Yours Truly. Some songs don't really have anything to do with summer, either. For maximum pleasure, listen to these gems in their entirety and in proximity of sunshine.

Listen to the whole thing at http://www.playlist.com/playlist/19830760715

"Let's Go Surfing" by The Drums
Short, sweet, and catchy. Basically sums up the mindset of your typical ADD-ridden, second-semester senior attempting to get anything done.

"The Summer Song" by YACHT
With a sick bass groove like this, who could resist hitting the dance floor with a few classy moves?

"Little Secrets" by Passion Pit
One of those jams that make you feel good despite the dithering keyboards and obnoxious little-boy voices singing in unison.

"Fifty on our Foreheads" by White Lies
This song is money with its glittering melody and soaring vocals. And is it just me, or does the lead singer have that whole Joy Division/Cure thing going on with his voice? Love.

"Bulletproof" by La Roux
Every time I listen to this, a pleasurable combo of wanting to break out my (nonexistent) dance moves and strutting down a runway spraying pepper spray into the eyes of every nemesis I've ever had consumes my soul. In other words, this song is boss.

"Pictures of You" by The Cure
The Cure. Enough said.

"Always Something There to Remind Me" by Naked Eyes
The little wedding-bell thing is just genius, not to mention the song is just straight-up catchy.

"Don't You Evah" by Spoon
A sparkling standout from their album 'Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga' (did I put the right amount of Ga's on there? I don't even know). If this doesn't get you in a sassy, foot-tapping mood, I don't know what will.

"Stranger Things" by Local Natives
The orchestral strings lilt with dead-on, almost unearthly tandems as the Local Natives' belt their killer harmonies. Rarely will you find a band that exudes equal amounts of professionalism and talent—'Stranger Things' is an obvious standout.

"Buffalo Stance" by Neneh Cherry
The little turntable scratches at the start get me every time. Sorry, I just had to throw in something corny from the 80's on here.

"Damnit Anna" by The Morning Benders
Who could resist that waifish little voice and that sparse, earnest acoustic, just strummin' away and damning that Anna? The Morning Benders are adorable. This is your cue to now buy their album.

"Scentless Apprentice" by Nirvana
Aah...nothing like a good dosage of Nirvana to shake up the pace and shatter the norm. And that guitar tangent crawling up a raw, crunchy scale before Kurt unleashes his barbaric screams? Unreal.

"Feel it All Around" by Washed Out
The 80's-reminiscent beat, delicately washed over by a frothy bass makes a delectable treat out of a simple song.

"Fader" by The Temper Trap
This guy got pipes.

"NYC" by Interpol
Reminds me of a cool summer night, a glass of Pinot Noir in my left hand, and contemplating the panorama of my life thus far on top of a vacant balcony. Actually, I just really like this song.
