The girl’s varsity soccer team beat James RiverHigh School 2-0 at State Semi-Finals Friday morning. This is their fifth consecutive run for the State title. The team has won the last four years. At 10:00 a.m. June 9, 2012, the girls will play either Graham High School or rival Clark County High School in the final State match-up. Good luck ladies!
The end of spring break marks the start of the fourth and final quarter for the school year.
“We are finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” said Tallulah Lewis, a freshman. “But that also means that SOLS and exams are quickly approaching.”
The year couldn’t end any quicker. There are less than 60 days left in the year and students can easily become unfocused on their school work.
“Even though there is only a quarter left in the year, I want to make sure I end mine on a strong note,” said Lewis.
You may have seen senior Andre Hopson in the hallway or in some of your classes, humbly and inconspicuously going about his business. Andre doesn’t draw attention to himself, but when he’s rapping, all eyes are on him.
He was a hit at the past few JV shows. Although most may see music as his hobby, to Hopson it is his passion.
“I like to take different sounds to make a beat and then put it all together and rap to it,” said Hopson.

If you are a “Hunger Games” fan, March 23 was the day you have been waiting for.
People waited outside movie theatres for the highly anticipated midnight premiere. The night of the event, the feedback on Facebook was instant.
“The Hunger Games were AMAZING, seriously best movie ever!!!!! Had the best night ever!” one fan said after the movie had ended.
“I can’t stop talking about it! It was a thrilling, passionate movie that thoroughly portrayed the book. I am hoping they make more. I would love to watch another!” someone else put as their status.
“The movie was fantastic! They cut out a lot from the book,” commented Eleanor Langford, freshman. “But the actors did a great job! It was well worth the wait!”
Even students who went on the band trip to Atlanta, Georgia saw it. “It was really cool because [“The Hunger Games” is] HUGE in Atlanta. We saw a lot of people wearing shirts and going to it. Plus, the theatre was giant so more people could see the movie. It was also really fun to get to see it in a big group with all your friends and classmates.” said Haley Zullo, freshman.
There were also a lot of students at Mason who were trying to plow through the book before they saw the movie.
“It was pretty easy to finish the book. It’s really fast paced and action packed, I couldn’t put it down. I can’t wait to read the second one,” freshman Eva Wilton, explained. “It helped me understand the movie a whole lot better.”
Just days prior to the long awaited spring break, teachers have been piling on the tests and homework before the third quarter ends on Thursday. “I have been so stressed out lately!” said Sara Campbell, a freshman. “Between sports and studying for tests all in one day! This could possibly be worse than midterms. But I would much rather have them now than have it hanging over me all break long.”
Whether you went or not, you probably know someone who went to “Breakaway.”
Breakaway is a youth group retreat sponsored by The Falls Church which took place over President’s Day weekend. While it’s sponsored by The Falls Church, Breakaway is so much more than a religious retreat.
Breakaway is about meeting new people and strengthening friendships. It’s about team work, music, skits, food, games, and ropes courses. It’s about growth and finding yourself. It’s a time to get “real” with close friends and perfect strangers.

Students were freed last week from their block three classes to see a great performance of “Grease” in the auditorium. All of the theatre classes have been working on their plays or musicals since the beginning of the school year. The block three class performed their production for the middle school as their mid-term exam.
While block three preformed “Grease,” other classes preformed SNL skits, “Pirates Of the Caribbean,” and “Chicago.”
