Beginning in the 2011 school year, George Mason will face two new foes in the Bull Run athletic district. Both schools have moved down to single A recently but have not changed their school size at the same time.

One of the schools is William Monroe High School which is in Greene County. Greene County is a staggering 95 mile and nearly two-hour drive from Falls Church. The school enrolls less then 1000 students currently but is planning to expand.

Greene County’s athletic director Katie Brunelle recently told the Greene County Record that “I don’t think we’re going to walk into the Bull Run district and immediately start winning.”

The school’s football coach also told the Greene County Record “We know we’re going into an awfully competitive district.” Their school mascot is a Dragon and the school’s colors are green and white.

The other school joining the district is Central High School, which is located in Woodstock, VA. That is also a hike away being 85 miles away and an hour and a half drive away from George Mason. The high school is currently enrolled with about 750 in grades 9-12.

The school is also excited to get out of Group AA after a computer error placed them in Group AA instead of the Group A district. Their school’s mascot is an Eagle and the school colors are blue, white, and gold.

Yearbook a year too late? George Mason’s yearbook released in August
Reviews and Editorials

George Mason has a good history of putting out a great yearbook every year. They also have a recent history of making our yearbooks come out later every year.

Last school year the yearbook was not released until August. This comes one year after students complained about the yearbook coming out too late on the last day of school in the 2009-2010 school year.

While yearbook staff made sure that Spring sports were included in the year book starting that year, it made it come out a considerable amount of time later.

The yearbook does come out with new features every year and always manages to include more pictures and larger ones too. It is very well organized and quite beautiful, but at what point does it come out too late?

yearbookeditedSome of last year's seniors were not able to share the enjoyment of signing each other's yearbooks and looking at the pictures together due to most of them being already at college by the time they received them. Instead of having actual yearbooks to sign, students were given a three-page booklet that friends could sign and then put in their yearbook before the end of last school year. This really doesn't create the same feeling as actually getting a yearbook actually signed by friends in different spots in the book, for example getting teammates to sign the soccer team's page.

Yearbook adviser and teacher Mr. Jeremy Shumpert says that it is necessary for the yearbook to come out in August. He says to the students complaining about release that “You have to understand that the yearbook is about the future -- in five, 10, or even 20 years in the future.” He wants to make sure that the seniors can see their final memories of George Mason like senior trips to King’s Dominion or graduation.

So what does George Mason need to do to insure a quicker yearbook? Junior Alissa Forbes who worked with the yearbook staff said, "For the yearbook to come out sooner there needs to be more staff."

Shumpert says that “The earliest it came come out is in August; the company needs four to six weeks to publish the book.”

This would make the earliest date for it in early August, given that everything is submitted in time. He also says that if yearbook was offered as a class that it would be even faster.
