Cheerleaders decorate foreign language hallway with Mason spirit

“Fighting for, united are we M-U-S-T-A-N-G-S!”

The George Mason cheerleaders demonstrated school unity and decorated the foreign language hallway with streamers, balloons, encouraging messages and even the Mason fight song.

Cheerleaders stayed long hours afterschool Wednesday; most stayed until six o’clock to support their school and surprise fellow classmates as they arrived the next day to see the transformed hallway.

Beth Byrd, George Mason sideline and competition cheerleading coach, happily explained the inspiration behind decorating the hallway: “I am a believer that cheerleaders should lead the school in spirit. When I was in high school, the cheerleaders would decorate the whole school.”

The cheerleader’s hallway or deemed by many students as “the Spirit Hallway,” has encouraged many students to rally together to support Mason.

George Mason students and staff who have not yet supported their fellow Mason athletes should start by coming to the Homecoming football game Friday against John Champe at 7:30 p.m. Make sure you show your school spirit by wearing Mustang colors and bring loud voices to cheer on our athletes.

Fall JV Show ramping up

The JV Show is one of the major events indicating the school year is in full swing. Many of the acts in the show have worked long and hard to prepare their performance at the Prom fundraiser.

The Dream Boats, a rock band, began practicing for the show before school even started.

Veteran groups such as Security Report, a classic rock cover band, are already comfortable with the process.

JVSHOW“In the weeks leading up to a show, we partake in team bonding activities, such as Ultimate Frisbee, so that we learn how to work well together as a group,” said senior Tyler Waters, drummer/backup vocalist for Security Report.

The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on October 18 and 19, featuring the GMHS Jazz Band, senior Jason Kutchma, junior David Ries, and many others.

Tickets are $5 for students and $8 for adults.

Miniconferences, Columbus Day add up to unusual schedules

Friday October 5, we will have a two-hour delay.  The delayed schedule is due to the parent-teacher mini-conferences that will take place tomorrow morning.  There will be no homeroom, Mustang Block, or third block.

“During the parent-teacher mini-conferences, I’m going to be sleeping with my SpongeBob sheets,” said Harry Slonim, junior.

Next Monday there will be no school due to Columbus Day.  Although there is no school, there will be “volleyboys” game at 7 p.m. in the main gym.

Dixon_edited_10-2-12Paste! Cut! Cover! Color! Today is Hall Decorating Day!

When the bell rings signaling the end of block six, and therefore the end of the school day, students should meet in the hallway assigned to their individual grade to start adding some spirit to the walls of George Mason.  If students do not know their designated hallway, they should talk to their class officers.

Classes have had since Monday to plan and prepare for their board game-themed halls.

“We are prepared! I’m really excited about having Candy Land as our theme; there will be so many colors and all the characters and Mason spirit!” said a very energized Joe Warren, junior.

All grades will have from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. to decorate their halls.  At 5:00 p.m., it is expected that not only will the hallway be complete, but also be thoroughly cleared of any scraps and garbage.  Judging will take place a little after 5:00 p.m. by teacher and staff volunteers, and the results will be announced on the SCA’s Twitter account.
