Mason Track and Field Sprints Into Post-Season

Mason Track and Field Sprints Into Post-Season

By Tara Holman and Ziggy Thetard

Surpassing previous accomplishments, George Mason Track and Field begins post-season with more athletes participating in post-season meets than in past seasons. Many improvements have been made over the past few weeks as athletes have pushed themselves both mentally and physically.

Concerning George Mason’s 2013-2014 Track and Field season, Head Coach Alisa Harvey states “Both the Girls and the Boys Teams have made steady individual improvements throughout the season.  Steady improvements are a track coaches dream!... I think the biggest contributor to the Team's success this year has been the discovery of each individual's best suited events.”

Harvey highlights Freshmen Jacob Plata and Elizabeth Ward, Sophomore Isabelle Kessler,  and Senior Preston Custer as making significant improvements this season. As a new member of Mason’s Track and Field team, Plata has improved tremendously, expanding his events to not only the 400m, but also the 100m, 200m and 800m. Plata is also a valued member of the state qualifying 4x400m relay. Ward exceeded expectations when she ran the 1600m for the first time, qualifying for regionals in addition to qualifying ...

Lady Mustangs’ soccer team face district rivals: Clarke County

By Melissa Johnson

The Lady Mustangs have faced Clarke County as a challenge every year and now they have the chance to beat Clarke at home for the first time since the 2012 season. The second game is sure to be a competitive game with both teams fighting for the win in the game. After the first loss, Clarke is out for a rematch.

“I think Clarke was definitely not satisfied about last game’s result, so I expect them to come out hard and ready to fight,” said senior captain and forward/midfielder Claire Trevisan. “It will be crucial to make sure we are the one’s who dictate the game in order to have successful result.”

The Mustangs are halfway through the regular season, and have started out strong with an undefeated record, with 61 goals for, and only four goals against. While the Mustangs have come off with a strong first half of the season, the Mustangs are wor...

Girls and boys soccer start season off with a bang

Girls and boys soccer start season off with a bang

By Paul Darmstadter

Both the girls and boys varsity soccer teams have started their seasons off undefeated and full of confidence.  Each team has played only three games; two games against Strasburg and Clarke County were postponed due to snow on the field, against Warren County, Madison County, and William Monroe.  Both teams are either leading or tied for the lead in the Bull Run District standings.

The boys team has shut out all their opponents and are leading the Bull Run District in scoring with 20 goals in three games.  Their leading goal scorer is Raheem Lawal, with six goals.  The team defeated Warren County 4-0, and mercy ruled Madison County and William Monroe 8-0 at home.

“I am happy with the way we started the started the season,” said Kavon Nowroozi, junior.  “I think we have overwhelmed all our opponents with our dominating possession and quick counterattacks.  We are good defensively because we put constant pressure on the other team, causing them to make mistakes and we have a very clinical attack.”

The team hopes to break the school records for most shutouts in a season (18) and most goals in a season (104) as well and win another...
