George Mason High School senior Mollie Read has been selected as a National Merit Scholarship winner in the 56th year of the prestigious academic competition. Scholarships are awarded based on SAT scores, grade point averages and other considerations.

In her quest for the scholarship, Read competed against 1.5 million students who entered the program nationwide, and is among only 8,400 of those who were selected as winners, with more than $36 million in scholarships awarded this year. Read was one of five finalists to be named from George Mason High School.

This is not Read's first academic recognition. Earlier this year, Read was the winner of the Raudenbush Scholar Prize for Spanish Language Learning. She is also member of the National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society and is president of the GMHS Environmental Club.

Following graduation, Read has chosen to attend Grinnell College in Iowa.
