The current task on hand for the Mason team is to have their own team instead of collaborating with another high school. The problem is that although the interest for hockey is huge, it is a difficult sport to play. First, a player must learn how to skate, which poses the hardest challenge for new players; learning how to play the game is the second task. The team is always looking for interested students no matter what experience they have. The Mason team has enrolled in a spring hockey league at Kettler in order to have fun and for new players to get a taste of hockey.
The spring league is a great place for new hockey players to get a grasp of the game. It is not as intense at the winter season and the focus is on getting the most time on the ice. There are very few practices and most of the time is spent playing other local teams in the area. None of these teams are composed of exclusively travel players, instead the players are simply students that are hoping to continue playing hockey; these teams could, like Mason’s team, be comprised of many first time players.
Without Stan Fendley, father of freshman Adam Fendley, the hockey team would still be a dream and this article would never have been written. He managed the league by himself and sent many emails to other high schools in search of combining teams, although most were turned down. Fendley came to many stick and shoots to work with
