Out of 100 George Mason upperclassmen polled, 41% have a part time job, which means that they are balancing school-work with a job, and most likely another sport, club, or other after-school activity. So how do these kids do it all? Lasso asked a few students that have been seen around town on the job to find out what their schedule is like and how they have time for it all.
Junior Alex Connole works at Famous Dave’s in
“I can usually manage the time [between work and school], unless I have a big project or paper. I usually work only on the weekend so it’s not too bad,” said Connole.
If weekends are spent at work and weekdays are
for school, where do friends fit in?
Connole said that she “usually [has] to stay up late after work to get homework done or to have time to hang out with friends.”
Now that it’s spring-time, softball is another activity that Connole has to balance time with. She said that it has gotten harder to manage all three activities, but she continues to get it all done.
Advice that Connole offers for other people interested in getting a part time job is that “they make sure they are prepared for the time that’s going to be taken away and they need to make sure to stay on top of their homework.”

at Dogwood Tavern in Advice Jost offers on balancing work with school is to only take on as much work as you know you can handle, and to remember that schoolwork is always the first priority.
Price added that it is important to work at a place that knows that you have to balance your time.
She said that at Dogwood, employees can “turn in a schedule request of days that [they] can or can’t work every two weeks,” which makes it a lot easier to balance work with school.
Junior Emily Bell pointed out that “having a part-time job doesn’t necessarily have to be stressful, it’s a lot of fun at times because you’re around people that you don’t go to school with and I’ve also learned a lot from working, so it’s like a second learning environment too. Though it’s stressful, I can definitely say that it’s worth it, earning your own money feels great!”

Some people may be concerned that working will take up too much of their time and they won’t be able to do their homework or hang out with their friends. Stahley said that even though work takes up a lot of time, there is still time for other activities.
“I get overwhelmed with homework but I manage my time well. I do the weekend’s homework on Thursday and Friday and sometimes after work on the weekends, but really it all comes down to time management. And even with all my homework and my job I still find time to hang out with my friends,” Stahley said.
When asked if she had any advice for students who have jobs or who are looking into getting a job, Stahley said “everyone has their own way of managing their time so you just have to find out what works for you, whether it is doing your homework early or maybe working fewer hours.”
