Three George Mason High School students have earned national recognition as National Merit Scholarship finalists. Hannah Beaman, Liam O'Connell and Honora Overby today received letters notifying them that they are among an elite group of students nationwide who are eligible to compete for the prestigious academic scholarships.

All were recognized during morning announcements this morning at George Mason High School. The Mason students are among approximately 15,000 students nationally who are competing for 8,300 Merit Scholarships. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

The 2013 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news media announcements in April, May and July. Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s own funds and approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions.
