The State X-country meet was Saturday at Great Meadow in The Plains. The top 7 runners for both the Mason boys and girls teams ran in the Group A races.

The Girls from the Single A schools had the first race of the day. Both teams and individual runners are entered in the State competition. After a false start they were all called back, and the second time the gun got them off and running. Spectators could see the progress across the open fields but it wasn't until the last 1000 meters that a really good view could be had. Cheering erupted as the girls came down the final stretch.

Freshman Blaise Sevier was first across the finish line for Mason in fifth place overall. She was in 2nd place for the team runners with a time of 20:05. Corinne Carson, also a freshman, place 14th overall with a time of 20:36. She was in 8th place for the team finishers. The remaining 5 runners worked hard together and came to the finish line in a big burst of red: Kaitlin Kutchma 23rd (21:22), Lauren Meinhart 24th (21:24), Kate Atkeson 27th (21:35), Alicia Devereaux 30th (21:38), and Clara Frost 32nd (21:53). The Girls team placed 2nd in the State. Wilson Memorial came in first with 58 points, Mason in second with 84, and Strasburg in 3rd with 114. A great result.

The Boys race followed and Mason went out strong. Two seniors led the way for most of the race, Jesse Schaffer and Jeremy K. Brown. At the very end, Junior, Austin Gogal passed Jeremy making for a very tight finish for the Mason Boys. Jesse Schaffer place 13th overall, and 6th for the team runners with a time of 16:57. Austin Gogal was next across the finish line for Mason in 12th place for team runners and a time of 17:24, followed by Jeremy K. Brown 16th (17:35), Nate Jones 25th (17:46), David Drawbaugh 29th (17:56), and Truman Custer 49th (18:30). Mason's other runner, Jackson Jost was trying to come back from an injury but couldn't finish on an injured foot.

They placed 3rd in the State, not quite all they'd hoped but a great result as the team balanced illness and injury into the final days. Radford was 1st with 69 points, Parry McCluer in 2nd with 76 points, and Mason in 3rd with 88 points. The anticipated rivalry with Wilson Memorial which bested Mason at Regionals never materialized.
