The GMHS faculty proved that youth is no match for experience in the first annual Tassel Classic faculty-student basketball game Friday before last. Despite the students’ spirited playing and announcer Bob Bumgarner’s resounding warning to seniors that “if you don’t win, you might not graduate!”, the faculty stayed ahead from the very start, eventually winning 47 – 41.
Both teams upped the scoring in the third quarter, but the faculty pulled away even further, to 35 – 28. The students were able to close the gap to within two points in the fourth quarter with players scoring across the board. But when the buzzer rang at the end of the game, the faculty had proved victorious by a margin of six points.
The faculty team (which, like the senior team, was co-ed) consisted of players representing the math, English, social studies, physical education, foreign language, and special education departments, as well as several sports coaches and representatives from custodial services, maintenance, security, and administration. The team was coached by Bill Broderick and Vicki Galliher. The seniors’ team was made up of many players from the girls’ and boys’ varsity basketball teams, as well as other experienced Masonites. This year marked the inaugural “Tassel Classic,” and judging from the game’s strong attendance, the students will have another chance to prove themselves next year.
