Mason Charges Through
Buffalo Gap Duals
By Mike Denny (Jan. 10, 2002)
After years of finishing last, or second-to-last
at every tournament, the Mason wrestling program is strong in numbers of
participants and victories. Already this year Mason finished 4th
at the Fort Meade invitational, a major tournament against AAAA and AAA
schools in Maryland, and second at the Manassas Park Cougar Classic. A
strong unit of underclassmen wrestlers of junior Dominic Clark, sophomores
Mac Cohe, Andrew Montgomery, Pete Taylor, and Mike Cummings backed dominated
opponents supporting the outstanding performances by senior captains Joey
Cohe and John-Henry Pitas who both won all of their matches on Saturday.
|Junior Dominic Clark
subdues his opponent for one of
his 5 straight victories
in last Saturday’s matches in the
Bison Duals. Mason
finished second overall. Clark is
ranked first in the
region in the 160 pound weight class
|For the second time in two weeks,
the George Mason wrestling team won a second place trophy in a major tournament.
This time it occurred at the Buffalo Gap Dual Tournament, which pits whole
teams against each other in dual format.
Mason defeated single A opponents
James River, Buffalo Gap, Essex, and Spotswood, a AA school from the Charlottesville
area. With these wins, the Mason herd of wrestlers won their pool carrying
them into the finals against Allegheny, another AA school from the Charlottesville
area. Losing this match by one point in a 33-32 showdown, a new breed of
Mason wrestling was finally apparent.
Mason will face a very tough district
quad meet this week against the defending state champ Brentsville, a meet
that will also include Rappahannock and Strasburg. The results of these
matches will impact the district seeding as well as showing "who’s who"
in the state.
