Building the Road, Mustangs Defeat Goochland 39-7
By Mike Denny
In the first game at the new Goochland Stadium, the Mustang football team defeated the Bulldogs of Goochland 39-7. After struggling as a team in the last two games against state runner-up Bath County and Stonewall Jackson, a true sense of unity filled the air as Mason scored 21 points in the first half, all three touchdowns belonged to junior Dominic Clark.
The Mustangs controlled the clock with a decisive ground attack based on the triple-option offense, new to Mason this year, using all of the potential rushing weapons including Dominic Clark who scored a total of four touchdowns, junior Eric Powell, and sophomores Matt Williams and Reggie Whitaker. While the passing game was limited to three passes, including one touchdown pass to senior tight-end Neil Powell, quarterback Matt Bond made up for the shortage in passing yards by rushing for nearly 100 yards.
The 39-7 defeat of Goochland ended with a failed scoring drive in the fourth quarter and a defensive touchdown by senior defensive back Ben Griffin, a returning second team all-district back. Going into the bye week before district scheduling, the Mustangs have a lot of work to do in order to prepare for a completely new level of district play.
In two weeks, Mason faces the traditionally large and tough Madison County Mountaineers in Madison County. This is the first game Mason needs to win in order to be district champion. Based on independent Internet rankings, Mason ranks 11th, two behind Madison in Region B. Before that can happen, improvements need to be made, which is the goal of the bye week scheduling.
There are many new faces in new positions taking their first roles in Mason football, a fact that testifies to the new depth of the Mason football program.
" I think we have a good chance of taking the district, we just need to have faith in ourselves and each other," said senior captain Joey Cohe.
