By Justin Barrow (October 5, 2001)
Mason girls’ basketball team pulled off a close 29-27 win over
district rival Brentsville on the Tigers’ home court last night.
The Mustangs started off sluggish in the beginning of the game and
could not put together an offense the first couple of times down the floor.
They committed three turnovers before scoring their first points of the
The Tigers also had trouble putting an offense together and by the
end of the first quarter the score was only 10-8. After the first, both
teams struggled to try and defeat each other’s grueling defense but to
no avail. The half ended with the Mustangs up 17 – 12.
In the third quarter the Mustangs struggled tremendously with scoring
and did not score a single point. The Tigers made a few baskets to bring
the score to 17–16. The fourth quarter brought the game alive. Both teams
felt an urgency to score and give it all they had for the last eight minutes
of play. Seniors, Meagan Ireland and Jessica
Szymanski showed a remarkable amount of heart by diving and hustling any
chance they got.
The score went back and forth with Brentsville leading and the Mustangs
trying to battle back. With about a minute to go the Mustangs took the
lead by a single point. Adrienne Thompson fouled out and that put Brentsville’s
Colleen Thomas on the line. She made one out of two free throws to tie
the game at 27.
With about 15 seconds to go, Brentsville fans thought that it was going
to go into overtime. Beth Pyne thought otherwise and marched down the floor
to score a basket off a pick from Amanda Harrington from right inside the
three-point line with three seconds to go. This gave the Mustangs the lead
and the win.
The high scorer of the game was Christina Sedney with 11. The team’s
next game is Tuesday, October 9 in the Pit.
